On 9th May, 1915, the 1st Somerset Light Infantry battalion 11 Brigade of 4th Division, moved to Wieltje, to the north-east of Ypres where 11 Brigade relieved 12 Brigade. There had been heavy fighting here earlier in the month as the enemy attempted to break into the salient during the Second Battle of Ypres and there was still a lot of shell fire to contend with. It is likely that it was this that accounted for the death of Ernest Barrett. |
